Moving to a new place is exciting, but also confusing. So many things to learn! Maybe the following can be of some help, courtesy of our members...


Things I Wish I Had Known

The back gate (Lily Pond and McClean Ave entrance) closes around 7pm, however the guarded front gate at School Road is open 24 hours. You may be required to present military ID at either gate on occasion.

There are no right turns on red, unless otherwise noted (on Staten Island and throughout NYC).

Leaving Staten Island:

There are five ways to get off the island: The Verrazano, Bayonne and Goethals Bridges, The Outerbridge Crossing, and the Staten Island Ferry.

To Brooklyn: The toll going over the Verrazano Bridge is $13 cash unless you register your EZ Pass as a SI resident, lowering the toll to $5.76, which is paid on the Brooklyn side of the bridge.

To New Jersey: The toll for the Goethals and Bayonne Bridges and Outerbridge Crossing is $8 cash, or $6 with an EZ Pass, paid on the Staten Island side.
  • The EZ Pass office is located at 1150 South Ave, Staten Island; you must apply in person.
  • Ask the Housing office for a letter stating your residency, before applying for an EZ Pass!
  • Service members working in Bayonne might be interested in the Port Authority Staten Island Bridges EZ Pass Plan: $80 for 20 trips in a 35-day period at the Goethals and Bayonne bridges and the Outerbridge Crossing, for $4 per trip. (Unused trips cannot be refunded.)
To Manhattan: The Staten Island Ferry is completely free! The St. George Terminal is at 1 Bay Street. Ferries run every half-hour on the hour and every 20 minutes during rush hour. Parking closest to the terminal is $8 except Sundays when it is free. Overflow parking is $7, near the Staten Island Yankee stadium (shuttle bus service provided).

Places of Interest:
Coast Guard Exchange:

Located at 228 Coast Guard Drive. The Exchange features uniform items, sportswear, snacks and refreshments, alcohol and tobacco products, basic necessities like milk and shampoo, and an ATM machine. There is also Dry-Cleaning drop-off service and UPS pickup available. (Note: During the summer, the Exchange closes at 3pm on weekends.)

Mon - Fri: 0900 – 1800
Sat:          1000 - 1700

Commissary at Fort Hamilton:

There is no commissary at Fort Wadsworth. However, there is one at our sister fort, Fort Hamilton, just over the Verrazano Bridge at Bldg 115 White Avenue; Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn, NY. (Note: The commissary is closed on Mondays; and Tuesdays following a Monday holiday.)

Tue-Fri: 1000 - 1900
Sat:        0900 - 1900

The Galley:

The Galley is located at 216 Coast Guard Drive. It is open to active-duty service members and their dependants as well as former service members and retirees. Military ID is required.

Fitness Center and Gymnasium:

Is located at 204 Molony Rd. Must have military ID to utilize facilities.

Sun:         1200-1600

MWR:

The Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) Office is located inside the gym building. The MWR has  discounted movie, Broadway, theme park, and local attraction tickets for sale.

Shopping:

Department Stores:
  • Staten Island Mall 2655 Richmond Ave. Also located in the vicinity of the mall is Pier 1, Barnes &; Noble, DSW. Across from the Sears entrance you will find Toys R Us, Bed/Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, and Michaels Crafts.
  • Target at 2900 Veterans Rd. West. Across from Target is Home Depot; Applebees; Bed/Bath & Beyond; Petco and Christmas Tree Shop. Also in the vicinity is Panera Bread; Carters; Justice for Girls, and Modell’s.
  • Kohls at  2239 Forest Avenue, shares a parking lot with Lowes Home Improvement. Less than a mile down the road is Forest Plaza, featuring Western Beef grocery, H & R Block, Jo-Anne Fabric and Craft, GNC, Sally Beauty Supply, DOTS, the Dollar Tree and more.
  • Wal-Mart at 1601 West Edgar Rd; Linden, NJ. Along this road you will also find most major stores and restaurants, BJ's; Target; Home Depot; Old Navy; Marshall's; AC Moore; Staples. Another 10 miles past Wal-Mart is Woodbridge Mall on the left.
