Sector New York has a Facebook page called Coast Guard New York Support Page. Be sure to check it out!
Moving to a new place is exciting, but can also be confusing. With so many things to learn maybe the following can be of some help, courtesy of our members...
- The back gate (Lily Pond and McClean Ave entrance) closes around 9 pm, however the guarded front gate at Bay St. and School Road is open 24 hours. You may be required to present military ID at either gate on occasion. ID checks are also held at random at the entrance to Housing.
- There are no right turns on red, unless otherwise noted (on Staten Island and throughout NYC).
- The city wide speed limit is 25 M.P.H. unless otherwise noted. There are hidden traffic cameras that automatically send you tickets. Watch your speed, especially in School Zones (School Zones are 24 hours a day, 7 days a week) Use NYCServ to look up tickets
- "No Standing" means no parking and waiting.
- Grocery stores do not provide plastic bags and charge for paper bags. Be sure to bring your reusable bags with you when you shop! Both Stop & Shop and Shop Rite deliver groceries to your door. Stop & Shop uses PeaPod services and Shop Rite has their own site. Runs about $7 - $10 for delivery. www.peapod.com www.shopritedelivers.com
- Spectrum and Verizon Fios are the internet and cable options in Housing. You may have a satellite, but there are very strict rules as to where the dish may be placed. Check with Housing and Facilities before installation. Verizon Fios and Spectrum offer cable and internet in our area.
- Verizon Fios: 1-800-VERIZON (837-4966), Spectrum: 1-844-850-9396
- If a child turns 4 during any time of a year (January 1st - December 31st), they may enroll in Pre-K. You may apply to the schools of your choice. Pre-K is half day (a.m. or p.m.) or full day and it's free. Most daycare centers offer a free UPK (Universal Pre-K) program. Zip code for Housing is 10305.
- If a child turns 5 during any time of a year (January 1st - December 31st), they must enroll in Kindergarten. You may apply to the schools of your choice or send them to P.S. 53 or P.S. 39, the two schools for Housing's District (District 31). Middle school aged students (grades 6-8) attend I.S. 24. The Coast Guard has maintained a long standing partnership with P.S. 53 and I.S. 24 for many years, and busing is provided for our students to both schools from CG Housing.
- There is an application process for high schools on Staten Island.
- There are also private schools on the island that offer military discounts and some offer busing to and from base.
- There is a very large group for Homeschooling in Housing. We can help you put together a Letter of Intent to Home-school.
- We have parents on base who are liaison's to the schools and can answer more specific questions you may have. Please contact us and we will be happy to get you in touch with the correct representative.
There are six ways to get off the island: The Verrazano, Bayonne and Goethals Bridges, The Outerbridge Crossing, and the Staten Island Ferry and the St. George Ferry. All bridges and tunnels charge a toll. You are eligible for the Staten Island Resident discount for the EZ Pass.
To Brooklyn: The toll going over the Verrazano Bridge is $11.19 Tolls-by-Mail rate, $6.94 EZ Pass rate, or $2.75 if you register your EZ Pass as a SI resident, which is paid on the Staten Island side of the bridge.
To New Jersey: All rates for Lincoln & Holland tunnels, the George Washington, Bayonne & Goethals bridges, and the Outerbridge Crossing are $18.31 Tolls-by Mail rate, $16.06 EZ Pass peak hours rate (Weekdays: 6am - 10am, 4pm - 8pm, Saturday & Sunday: 11am - 9pm), or $14.06 EZ Pass off peak hours rate (all other hours). Tolls are collected entering New York, no tolls are collected entering New Jersey. All Port Authority crossings are cashless and no longer accept cash toll payments
Use your Welcome Letter from Housing as proof of Staten Island residency when applying for an EZ Pass!
PASI & SIR Discount Plans
Service members working in Bayonne might be interested in the Port Authority Staten Island Bridges Plan (NY/NJ PASI Plan):
$8.03 per trip at the Goethals Bridge, Bayonne Bridge and Outerbridge Crossing, provided you make at least three Staten Island-bound trips in a calendar month. After the completion of the third trip at these three crossings in any calendar month, toll charges for all trips made at these crossings within the calendar month will be processed at the NY/NJ PASI Plan rate ($8.03 per trip).
All E-ZPass tags on the account count towards the minimum trip requirement, so multiple-driver households have an easy way to save with the NY/NJ SIB Plan.
If no trips are made across the Goethals Bridge, Bayonne Bridge or Outerbridge Crossing in a calendar month, no plan-related charges will be made to your E-ZPass account.
To add the NY/NJ SIB Plan (Plan Code PASI) or to open an E-ZPass account, contact your E-ZPass Customer Service Center:

The Staten Island Ferry is completely free! The St. George Terminal is at 1 Bay Street. Ferries run 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week, depart every half-hour on the hour, and every fifteen minutes during rush hour. When returning to Staten Island, look for Whitehall Terminal at 4 South St. in Lower Manhattan.
Empire Outlets Garage: This is a popular choice, especially for those also shopping at the mall. It's very close to the terminal. Pricing varies depending on the day rate and monthly options, with a daily rate of $9.50 for commuters.
Staten Island Courthouse Garage and Parking Lot: Located a few blocks away from the terminal, this is another option when other spots are full. The rates are typically lower per hour, but a longer stay can be more expensive.
Ferry Terminal South Parking Lot: This municipal lot is closest to the terminal, but it can fill up, especially during peak hours. It offers both short-term and long-term metered parking.
On-Street Parking: Metered parking is available along the streets near the terminal. You can pay at a machine or in the Park NYC app.
The St. George Ferry (Fast Ferry) connects Staten Island with the West Side of Manhattan in Battery Park City and Midtown West. One way tickets are $4.50 and 10 trip pass is $29.00 (Parking options would be the same as Staten Island Ferry)
All tickets can be used for a free transfer to another route within 120 minutes of activation.
Tickets can be purchased on the NYC Ferry App, and at Ticket Vending Machines located on NYC Ferry landings.
The Ferry Discount Program permits eligible individuals to purchase a reduced fare One-Way Ticket for $1.45.
