Sector New York has a new Facebook page called Coast Guard New York Support Page. Be sure to check it out!
Moving to a new place is exciting, but can also be confusing. With so many things to learn maybe the following can be of some help, courtesy of our members...
Things I Wish I Had Known
- The back gate (Lily Pond and McClean Ave entrance) closes around 7 pm, however the guarded front gate at School Road is open 24 hours. You may be required to present military ID at either gate on occasion. ID checks are also held at random at the entrance to Housing.
- There are no right turns on red, unless otherwise noted (on Staten Island and throughout NYC).
- The city wide speed limit is 25 M.P.H. unless otherwise noted.
- "No Standing" means no parking and waiting.
- Both Stop & Shop and Shop Rite deliver groceries to your door. Stop & Shop uses PeaPod services and Shop Rite has their own site. Runs about $7 - $10 for delivery. www.peapod.com www.shopritedelivers.com
- Time Warner Cable and Verizon are available in Housing for cable and internet. You may have satellite, but there are very strict rules as to where the dish may be placed. Check with Housing and Facilities before installation.
- If a child turns 4 during any time of a year (January 1st - December 31st), they may enroll in Pre-K. You may apply to the schools of your choice. Pre-K is half day (a.m. or p.m.) or full day and it's free. Most daycare centers offer a free UPK (Universal Pre-K) program. Zip code for Housing is 10305.
- If a child turns 5 during any time of a year (January 1st - December 31st), they must enroll in Kindergarten. You may apply to the schools of your choice or send them to P.S. 53 or P.S. 39, the two schools for Housing's District (District 31). Middle school aged students (grades 6-8) attend I.S. 24. The Coast Guard has maintained a long standing partnership with P.S. 53 and I.S. 24 for many years, and busing is provided for our students to both schools from CG Housing.
- There is an application process for high schools on Staten Island.
- There are also private schools on the island that offer military discounts and some offer busing to and from base.
- There is a very large group for Homeschooling in Housing. We can help you put together a Letter of Intent to Home-school.
- We have parents on base who are liaison's to the schools and can answer more specific questions you may have. Please contact us and we will be happy to get you in touch with the correct representative.
Leaving Staten Island:
There are five ways to get off the island: The Verrazano, Bayonne, and Goethals Bridges, The Outerbridge Crossing, and the Staten Island Ferry.
To Brooklyn: The toll going over the Verrazano Bridge varies by residency and method of payment. Toll by mail is $10.15 in each direction. If you register your EZ Pass as an NYC resident (simply by proving residency through a letter from the Housing Office or utility bill such as a cable), it is $6.55. If you register as a SI resident it is $2.75
To New Jersey: The toll for the Goethals and Bayonne Bridges and Outerbridge Crossing is $16 cash or toll by mail, or $11.75 (off peak hours) to $13.75 (peak hours; 6 am -10 am and 4 pm - 8 pm weekdays; 11 am - 9 pm weekends) with an EZ Pass, paid on the Staten Island bound side.
- The EZ Pass office is located at 1150 South Ave, Staten Island (Hours:
Monday-Friday: 7am-7pm Saturday: 8am-12pm); you must apply in person.
- Ask the Housing office for a letter stating your residency, before applying for an EZ Pass!
- Service members working in Bayonne might be interested in the Port Authority NY/NJ Staten Island Bridges Plan (NY/NJ SIB Plan):
- $6.88 per trip at the Goethals Bridge, Bayonne Bridge and Outerbridge Crossing, provided you make at least 3 New York-bound trips in a calendar month. After the completion of the third trip at these three crossings in any calendar month, toll charges for all trips made at these crossings within the calendar month will be processed at the NY/NJ SIB Plan rate ($6.88 per trip).
- All E-ZPass tags on the account count towards the minimum trip requirement, so multiple-driver households have an easy way to save with the NY/NJ SIB Plan.
- If no trips are made across the Goethals Bridge, Bayonne Bridge or Outerbridge Crossing in a calendar month, no plan-related charges will be made to your EZ Pass account.
- If one or two trips are made across the Goethals Bridge, Bayonne Bridge or Outerbridge Crossing in a calendar month, the toll for those trips will be reposted to your account at the EZ Pass toll rate, based on the time the trip was made (currently $11.75 during off-peak hours and $13.75 during peak hours).
- To add the NY/NJ SIB Plan (Plan Code PASI) or to open an EZ Pass account, contact your EZ Pass Customer Service Center:
- E-ZPass New York Customer Service Center • www.ezpassny.com • 1-800-333-8655
- E-ZPass New Jersey Customer Service Center • www.ezpassnj.com • 1-888-288-6865
- The Staten Island Ferry is completely free! The St. George Terminal is at 1 Bay Street. Ferries run every half-hour on the hour and every 20 minutes during rush hour.
- The NYC Ferry's St. George route connects Staten Island with the West Side of Manhattan in Battery Park City and Midtwon West.
- Parking closest to the terminal is $8 except Sundays and Federal Holidays when it is free. Overflow parking is $7, near the Staten Island Ferry Hawks stadium (shuttle bus service provided).
