What inspiresyou? Is what inspires you today the samething that inspired you yesterday, last year, before you had a family? Finding some way to inspire yourself is keyto accomplishing your goals. What yourinspiration is does not matter. Justfind something that motivates you to get up and get moving.

We draw inspiration fromdifferent places as we change; our inspiration needs to fit who we are in thismoment. As a young runner, 20 years ago,winning was my inspiration. I definitelydidn’t win every race, but I always tried to. I always wanted to run as fast as I could. Later I ran for a team and together we weregreat. I was inspired by my teammates’dedication to following their dreams and giving their all. They made me want to be better every day.

Asan overworked college student I was inspired by the finish line. I got up early and looked forward tofinishing work. I went to class andlooked forward to finishing the day. I wasextremely goal-oriented and I pushed through the weeks, months, and semesterslooking forward to the finish line, graduation.

As a self-conscious new mother Iwas inspired by my children. After along recovery after each was born I was inspired to set a good example for them. I wanted both to be strong, confident,healthy and active growing up and as adults. I knew that they would not grow up loving and taking care of themselvesif they saw me doing just the opposite. I knew that I had to lead by example, and the dreams I had for theirfutures inspired me to make my present better.

As a more experienced mom andmore self-confident adult I find myself inspired by my parents. My mother was never active. She chased around a lot of kids, but neverput the effort into her health. All ofthe women in her family were that way. As the women in our family aged, one by one they were diagnosed withosteoporosis. In her 50’s my mom decidedto break the cycle and took up running and strength training. She works out 5 days a week now, and is stillchasing small children around. Hercourage to begin something new and her new dedication to herself continue toinspire me.

My father fought in Vietnam as young man in theAir Force and in Iraq as a soldier in the Army National Guard. He came home to Walter Reed in need of a newknee, from an obvious injury, and help coping with his less noticeable PTSD. He has his good days along with plenty of badones, but he fights on every day. Hisstrength and determination will continue to inspire me forever.

Exactly what inspires us will change constantly;sometimes with where we are in life, and sometimes simply with our mood. We need to stay open to these changes, andallow ourselves to be inspired every day. Look for inspiration in your families, your friends and in the worldaround you. When you find it, grab holdand let it push you towards your goals.

Couch to 5K Training Plan

The training plan starts the last week in January and goes through March.Couch-to-5k

OK…Sofor the first post for the Wellness portion of the blog I thought the besttopic to touch on was motivation. Thisis why so many of us want to achieve a goal, but never actually get started onthe path towards it. Often all we needis a reason to begin…

Youall know that I am a runner at heart. Itsounds weird, but I love feeling like I can’t possibly take another step, andthen realizing that another mile has passed by. I love trying to find out just how far or how hard I can pushmyself. Most people assume that thisgoes hand in hand with loving to get up and out to start my workout. THIS IS NOT TRUE!!!! Deep down I am really a couch potato atheart; especially in the winter. Afterfreezing at the bus stop and walking the dogs all I want is to curl up on the couchwith a second cup of coffee. Some days Ido just that. The best way to avoid thecomfy couch trap…FRIENDS!

Nokidding! Last year training for a 100mile running race, through the winter, often at weird times like 10 at night or4 in the morning, and in a lot of snow is not an idea that makes you want tojump off the couch and get out there. Itonly happened because I already had plans to meet someone else. How could I sleep in when my friend wasstanding outside in the freezing cold waiting for me? Being accountable to someone else is the bestway to make sure you get in some exercise. We have all let ourselves down, and we will all continue to do so. None of us, however, want to disappoint ourfriends. We will do anything to keep ourword to them and to support them in pursuing their goals.

Myadvice for beginning or continuing an exercise regimen this winter…commit toyour best friend’s health. Make your newyears resolution to get your neighbor healthier. Promise to make sure your bus stop buddy goesto the gym three days a week. Militarywives are always too good at taking care of everyone else first, so this year go ahead, take care of someone else.

Keeping a friend company on their path to ahealthier life just might be the motivation you need to hop on that pathyourself.

"Protect Your Family From Fire!"

Ever wonder why you don't see many historic buildings in Chicago? National Fire Prevention Week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres.

President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the first National Fire Prevention Week in 1925, noting that in the previous year some 15,000 lives were lost to fire in the United States. Calling the loss "startling", Coolidge's proclamation stated: "This waste results from the conditions which justify a sense of shame and horror; for the greater part of it could and ought to be prevented... It is highly desirable that every effort be made to reform the conditions which have made possible so vast a destruction of the national wealth".

This year's theme is "Protect Your Family From Fire!" This year National Fire Prevention Week is the week of October 9-15. Stop by the front desk of Building 212 for free fire safety brochures. Also look for fire safety brochures throughout family housing at Fort Wadsworth.

A few tips for how you can reduce your chances of a home fire:

*Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking. Many cooking fires start from “unattended” cooking. Do not wear long sleeves when cooking over an open flame.
*If you smoke, smoke outside.
*Keep flammable materials away from light bulbs, light fixtures and lamps.
*If you burn candles indoors, blow them out before leaving the room, and keep them away from flammable materials.
*Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly.

204th Anniversary of the birth of James S. Wadsworth

A program to acknowledge the
contributions of James S. Wadsworth to the USA and humanity will be held on

Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011
1 to 2 pm

at the Fort Wadsworth Visitor Center, Bldg. 120, New York Avenue

Program participants are invited to take the regularly-scheduled 2pm tour
of Fort Tompkins and the Overlook [ which lasts 45 minutes to an hour], as
well. The tour is given on a "weather-permitting" basis, once per day on
Saturdays and Sundays ]

{ please be aware the annual NY City Marathon starts at Fort Wadsworth the
first Sunday each November, which will be Nov. 6, this year. The
Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and the BQE may be closed by 6am that day }

The program celebrates the 204th anniversary of the birth of James S.
Wadsworth, the man for whom the former military reservation and current
National Park site is named. The program will be appropriate for persons
from 8 years, and older.

Mr. Wadsworth gave up his priviledged lifestyle at age 53 to serve in the
US Army during the Civil War. He was much loved and respected by the men in
his commands, an able and fearless combat officer, and served as Military
Governor of the District of Columbia coordinating the construction of that
area's forts during the first year of the Civil War. His leadership during
the Battle of Gettysburg helped the US Army prevail in that decisive
engagement.

He was mortally wounded leading his troops at the Battle of the
Wilderness in May, 1864. There are many more facets of General Wadsworth's
life which will be covered during the 1 hour program.
We may show our 12-minute video of the history of Fort Wadsworth at the end
of the program.

National Public Lands Day

Ninth Annual 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive to be held Sept. 1-12

The Spouses' Club's Executive Board recently attended a press conference at Staten Island's Postcards Memorial at which the borough President, James P. Molinaro, representatives from the New York Blood Center, and others spoke about the importance of donating blood before a tragedy occurs, and what their hopes are for this particular blood drive.

The goal is to collect 275 pints of blood, which is the number of Staten Island residents lost on September 11th.

Come to the Ferragasto Italian Festival being held at the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum this weekend!

On Sunday, August 14th, from 12 - 6pm at 420 Tompkins Avenue.

An Italian day of leisure, Ferragasto is celebrated this year by featuring music by Le Nozze Di Carlo (a local ethnic-themed music group), Bocce and Tarantella lessons, delizioso Italian cuisine (many of the best Italian restaurants and pastry shops in Staten Island will be represented),a wine tasting tent (adults only, of course!), games and crafts for children and all for the low, low admission price of $1. Every Wednesday until August 24, you can boogie the night away with friends, neighbors and family.

Each week, children of all ages dance to the beat of music from all around the globe. Learn about Salsa, African-American Step, Jive, classical Indian, Irish Step & more! As a bonus, every Boogie Woogie Wednesday includes an extra two hours to visit the museum, from 5 to 7 pm and a free pizza snack for all (while supplies last) before we take to our outdoor dance floor (weather permitting). 101st Annual 4th of July Travis Parade

Dubbed "Staten Island's 4th of July Parade" there's no doubt that it is certainly the longest running local parade in the Island's history and one of the oldest in these United States! Featuring pipe bands, fire-trucks, character floats, veterans' associations, antique cars, stilt-walkers and more, The Travis Parade is a renowned and locally revered tradition. The entire neighborhood competes in the accompanying House-Decorating competition, and the red, white and blue is everywhere you look! Step-off is at 12:30 p.m. from P.S. 26 and Showplace Entertainment Center. The route follows a tight triangle, going west on Victory Boulevard to Glen Street to Cannon Avenue; South on Victory Boulevard back to East Service Road. Ninth Annual Nighttime Walking Tour of Revolutionary War New York

Bring a giant cup of coffee to this late-night (or is that early-morning?) jaunt through the Financial District, led by tour guide James Kaplan. You’ll hit a few Revolutionary War sites, including Fraunces Tavern Museum (where George Washington gave a final address to Continental Army soldiers in 1783), and the tour culminates with participants watching the sun rise from Trinity Church. Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest

The Coney Island institution once again hosts this wiener battle, during which competitive eaters will see who can stuff the most hot dogs down their gullet in ten minutes. This year, the contest is split into men’s and women’s divisions, with a $20,000 grand prize available for the winner of each category. The favorites, respectively, are Joey “Jaws” Chestnut—who’s pursuing his fifth win—and Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas, who has held 24 different competitive-eating world records (including ones for MoonPies and chicken wings). The Liberty Belle Spectacular

Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks

More than 40,000 fireworks will shoot from six barges along the Hudson during this massive pyrotechnic display. The shebang begins around 9:20pm, but we suggest claiming a spot along Manhattan’s West Side much earlier than that. Eleventh and Twelfth Avenues are open to revelers, but many parks along the West Side Highway are not; check the Macy’s website for the most up-to-date information.

4th of July Fireworks at Intrepid
If you’d rather not deal with the riffraff, shell out a Benjamin to claim a spot aboard the Intrepid (Pier 86, Twelfth Ave at 46th St; 877-957-7447, intrepidmuseum.org; Mon 4 at 7pm; $100), which hosts a viewing party complete with musical simulcast of the Macy's show—its midtown location offers a pretty spectacular vantage point for the celebration. National Military Family Association Information

A few weeks ago, the National Military Family Association was generous enough to come out and spend some time to talk with us, and share some really great information. Here are a few things we discussed:

What is the National Military Family Association?

They are an organization made of: spouses, parents, family members, etc., of people in the military, all of whom work to represent military families. The association even works with Congress to make sure our voices are heard.

What do they offer?

Here are some of the many great things the association offers military families:

Scholarships

In 2011, more than 500 military spouses received scholarships through the Joanne Holbrook Patton Military Spouse Scholarship Program. These scholarships may be used to assist with tuition, fees, and school room and board. In addition to scholarships, the organization offers guidance with choosing the right programs/schools for you, and also navigating the GI Bill. For more information, check out these links:

Programs, Resources, and Camps for Children and Families

Operation Purple Program- A very important message that the association aims at promoting is, kids serve too. From their Website:

"The Operation Purple program was created in 2004 in response to parent’s call to "help us help our kids." The mission of the Operation Purple program is to empower military children and their families to develop and maintain healthy and connected relationships, in spite of the current military environment. We do this through a variety of means, including the healing and holistic aspect of the natural world. The program is joint or "purple"— and open to children and families of active duty, National Guard or Reserve service members from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or the Commissioned Corps of the US Public Health Service and NOAA."

Under Operation Purple Program, families are offered a chance to participate in free week-long summer camps to help children prepare/deal with the stress of a parent's deployment, family retreats, and wounded warriors + family camps.

There are also tool kits that can be distributed to the members of our community that interact with our children, to help them better understand what it's like to be a military kid, and how they can better meet their needs. See all the tool kits here: http://www.militaryfamily.org/publications/

Coney Island's Mermaid Parade

2011 MERMAID PARADE IS SATURDAY, JUNE 18TH, 2PM!

Welcome summer at this eclectic (and jam-packed) celebration, featuring revelers decked out in their most outrageous sea-themed costumes. Stunning vintage cars roll down the street alongside marching bands, gleefully glamorous floats, and all the wild and wacky mermaids, pirates, Neptunes and other creatures. There is some mild nudity, mostly topless ladies with pasties, but it's not much more than you'd see on the beach, and kids adore (and even march in) this fest.

A completely original creation of Coney Island USA, the Mermaid Parade is the nation's largest art parade and one of New York City's greatest summer events.

Founded in 1983 by Coney Island USA, the not-for-profit arts organization that also produces the Coney island Circus Sideshow, the Mermaid Parade pays homage to Coney Island's forgotten Mardi Gras which lasted from 1903 to 1954, and draws from a host of other sources resulting in a wonderful and wacky event that is unique to Coney Island.

The Mermaid Parade celebrates the sand, the sea, the salt air and the beginning of summer, as well as the history and mythology of Coney Island, Coney Island pride, and artistic self-expression. The Parade is characterized by participants dressed in hand-made costumes as Mermaids, Neptunes, various sea creatures, the occasional wandering lighthouse, Coney Island post card or amusement ride, as well as antique cars, marching bands, drill teams, and the odd yacht pulled on flatbed.

Each year, a different celebrity King Neptune and Queen Mermaid rule over the proceedings, riding in the Parade and assisting in the opening of the Ocean for the summer swimming season by marching down the Beach from the Boardwalk, cutting through Ribbons representing the seasons, and tossing fruit into the Atlantic to appease the Sea Gods. In the past, David Byrne, Queen Latifah, Ron Kuby, Curtis Sliwa, Moby, David Johansen, Harvey Keitel, Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed have graced our shores, presiding over the assembled masses.

This year's King Neptune, Brooklyn native Adam Richman from the Travel Channel's Man V. Food and Queen Mermaid, Cat Greenleaf from the New York Emmy Award winning television show, Talk Stoop with Cat Greenleaf will step off the parade on West 21st and the Surf Avenue. It will roll East to West 10th Street, where the cars and motorized floats will park. The marchers and push pull floats will go to the Boardwalk and march West to Stillwell Ave. where the Parade will Disband.

And a little advice straight from the folks who put on the parade? Don't bother driving there! The traffic is terrible and parking is a demolition derby.

The best way to get to Coney Island is to take the D, F, N or Q subway to Stillwell Avenue. The Coney Island amusement area is also accessible via Exits 6 and 7 on the Belt Parkway.

Come out and Play Festival, NYC

Come Out & Play is an annual festival of street games that turns New York City into a giant playground. [They] provide a forum for new types of public games and play by bringing together players eager to interact with the world around them and designers producing innovative new games and experiences.

In 2006, Come Out & Play began their community participation-based games in NYC. Over the years, thousands of players have gathered to play dozens of city-wide games. Players raced through the night in a city-wide game of zombie tag. Friends faced off in life-sized Pong using only their ears to “hear” the ball. (Papier-mache) pigeons were pummeled with wiffleball bats. Bicyclists armed with spray chalk and stencils competed to claim and build bike lanes. Strangers worked together to build and race blindly through labyrinths as part of a ancient lost sport. Payphones produced points, and Tompkins Square Park became a putt-putt course. And it’s all just the beginning...

True, the Upper East Side is known as the most affluent neighborhood in Manhattan, but that doesn't mean it will cost you an arm and a leg to spend a day with the family there. Here are some things to try in the Upper East Side that will not break the bank.

Visit the Gracie Mansion

The Gracie Mansion has been home to NYC's mayors since Fiorello H. La Guardia took up residence in 1942. The mansion has also been used to accommodate visiting officials and dignitaries, including former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, and former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela.

General Tours are offered on most Wednesdays at 10 AM, 11 AM, 1 PM and 2 PM. General admission is $7 for adults, $4 for seniors, and students are admitted free of charge. The Metropolitan Museum if Art

It's one of the world's largest, and finest art museums. With over 2 million works of art that span from prehistory to the present, you could spend a week at the museum, and still not see it all.

Besides the overwhelming number of art pieces, one of the best things about the Met is the fact that it is run on donations from visitors. Pit Stop: The Lexington Candy Shop

The name may be a bit misleading, but the Lexington Candy Shop isn't trying to fool anyone. This is an honest-to-goodness retro diner in the midst of the bustling streets of the UES. A tradition since 1954, Shakespeare in the Park has allowed the public the opportunity to see live theater for free in the park's outdoor Delacorte Theater. Good Morning America's Summer Concert Series

A Clearing in the Forest

The warm weather is finally here, time to get outside and explore a little. With so many great things to do in the city, it's hard to know where to start. Throughout the summer, I will be putting a spotlight on different areas in NYC, the goal is to fill you in on some of the wonderful things to see and do. Today's spotlight is on Governors Island.

How do I get there?
The island is open to the public every Friday-Sunday and all Holiday Mondays through September 25.

National Park Rangers present a thematic living history experience where children of all ages, with their chaperons, are invited to learn about the historic role of the people of Governors Island. Children will meet with an array of "guests" from the past such as soldiers, from the Civil War, Confederate Prisoners, civilians or a member from the Women's Army Corps. Reservations are not required.

The Family Housing Code Upgrade Contractor (American Artisan Group)has scheduled to start work on the main water line tap-in on 31 January 2011 for buildings 426 & 436. Weather permitting, the contractor will be excavating on USS Connecticut and USS Iowa Circle starting on 31 January for the sprinkler system connection. The road will be partially blocked-off and steel plates provided to cover the excavation. The archaeologist will also be on site during the excavation.

Federal School Funding

The Federal Department of Education's Impact Aid law provides federal money to public school districts based on the number of students whose parent/guardian work and or live on federal property. Last year, New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE) received $6M under the Impact Aid law.

For every federal employee or contractor who worked on federal property as of 10/31/10 and whose child attends a New York City public school and returns the below survey form, the NYC DOE will receive an additional $57.00. If the parent/guardian both lives and works on federal property, which would apply primarily to military personnel, the NYC DOE will receive an additional $553.00

Unfortunately, employees who work in a postal facility or in a leased building are not eligible for the program.

The first step to being considered is to fill out an application, add photos, and email it to us including the city in the subject heading! We love lots of information and look forward to getting a sense of the applicants’ circumstances, personality, and character. After reviewing applications, we’ll contact the candidates who we would like to consider and set up a phone interview. The next step in the selection process would be a meeting with one of our producers and a home site visit by Scott and a member of our design and construction team.

The family selected will need to be available for a few meetings and to sign a contract at the outset of the project. Once filming begins in May, they will need to be available to be on camera for approximately six non-consecutive days, and some part days during the renovation process. The entire renovation should be complete within one month. Candidates do need to own their house and contribute financially to the renovation project, which typically represents approximately 50% of the true cost. This episode will be launched in the summer or fall of 2011 in the USA and Canada.

Interested candidates should apply before February 1, 2011.

Clement Clark Moore (1779-1863) was the son of Dr. Benjamin Moore, the sixth rector of Trinity Parish. In 1822, as a Christmas present for his six children, Moore wrote the poem that became a classic for all to cherish. The Staten Island Reading Association will bring the importance of family literacy to the forefront on Saturday, November 6, 2010 from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Staten Island Children's Museum located on the grounds of Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Gardens, Livingston.

This third annual Family Literacy Celebration, "Fuel Your Mind...Read and Get Green!" will focus on the importance of our fragile environment through ongoing story readings, the Cell Motion Bio Bus, ecologically friendly arts and crafts, music and free book giveaways. The event is free with museum admission.

The goal of the Family Literacy event is to build a more literate and prosperous community. This year's ecological theme encourages reading together as a family while becoming more in tune to our fragile planet. Featured this year is the award winning Cell Motion Bio Bus. Dr. Ben Dubin-Thaler will drive his high tech laboratory on wheels to the grounds of the Children's Museum for the festivities. The Bio Bus operates by solar power, wind turbine, and an engine that runs on waste vegetable oil.

Special guest reader, Jason Elias will be on hand to read his entertaining book, "And Sometimes Y." Also on hand to read, will be Tyler Shegerian, founder of Greenager.com, a social network web site geared towards encouraging the younger generation to be more ecologically conscious. Clay Wollney, the Staten Island Advance Mr. Discovery columnist, will demonstrate the importance of recycling and will conduct an environmentally friendly activity with all participants.

The Search for NYMF’s Next Broadway Sensation returns for its fifth year and will take place at New World Stages on Sundays during the Festival (September 26, October 3, and October 10.)

This nationwide event takes place Saturday, Sept. 25, and is good for admission to a host of diverse and interesting museums throughout the country. Here are just a few of the participating museums in our area:

It doesn’t get more American than Rosanne Cash. Playing in support of last year’s The List, on which she covered a dozen of the 100 classic country songs once recommended to her by her dad, the late, great Johnny Cash. (Those that made the cut include “Long Black Veil,” “Bury Me Under the Weeping Willow,” and Bob Dylan’s “Girl From the North Country.”) No word if Cash plans to fill out her set this afternoon with the likes of “America the Beautiful” and “The Star-Spangled Banner,” but, given her flair for interpretation, it might just happen.

The theme of the show is “American Harmony.” The display, featuring multi-color shells exploding at a rate of more than 1,500 a minute, will cover more than a mile of skyline. Nortec Collective is a Tijuana- and Baja California-based outfit of producers and DJs who fuse pulsating electronics with traditional Mexican music. Barcelona-based El Guincho mixes afro-beat percussion, calypso harmonies, psych tropicália, world music samplers, doo wop, trance repetition, underwater pop and steel drums with club-oriented song structures and uptempo beats. Daughter to a French mother and a Chilean father, Anita Tijoux became famous in Latin America as the female MC of hip-hop group Makiza during the late 1990s. In 2006 she crossed over to the Latin mainstream pop due to her collaboration with Mexican songstress Julieta Venegas in the radio hit "Eres para mí." Jimmy Cliff is possibly the best-known living Jamaican reggae musician and songwriter. He is generally credited for helping popularize reggae internationally with his soundtrack to the Jamaican movie The Harder They Come, in which Cliff also starred. Cliff is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and holds the Order of Merit, the highest honor that can be granted by the Jamaican government for achievements in the arts. Trevor Hall has been writing and performing since he was 14 years old. A native of South Carolina, his unconventional mix of acoustic rock and reggae serves as a vibrant landscape for his thought-provoking lyrics, delivered with a soulful voice. Victor Démé was born in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, a landlocked region in West Africa. For more than 30 years Démé had performed throughout the bars and clubs in Ouagadougou and nearby Abidjan. Yet it wasn’t until he met the unlikely combo of a French journalist and local hip-hop club promoter that he was able to record his first album of original material.
